First Baptist Athletics was founded in 1968. It began modestly with 4
baseball teams of 6-8 boys. Today, there are over 90 baseball and
softball
teams as well as many soccer and basketball teams. This
era
has been a dynamic history that intentionally merges the need for
tradition
with the necessity for change. FBA has thus achieved continuity while
serving
the needs of contemporary families.
FBA was founded with the goal of providing an alternative to "win at
all
costs" sports programs. FBA's philosophy is to provide a fun, nurturing
Christian environment for family recreation. The original name, CCA,
stood
for Church and Community Athletics. This name symbolized the vision of
teaching young people and coaches how to compete on the playing field
without sacrificing sportsmanship and respect for others.
This unusual balance of athletic competition and good sportsmanship has made First Baptist Athletics a recognized leader in youth sports
programming
and child development.
Today's sports culture often seems to glorify poor sportsmanship and
lack of
respect for others. Our goal is to show kids that they can be winners
and be good sports at the same time. This is very difficult to
do; but our coaches
and volunteers are expected to teach young athletes how to compete
gracefully.
FBA is The Place for Good Sports in that we use the popularity
of sport to
teach kids valuable lessons about life: the importance of teamwork
and fair
play, respect for others, being a gracious winner or loser, conflict
resolution
and taking responsibility for one's own actions.
We believe that our faith is the foundation that enables us to provide
this
unique environment for children and families of all faiths to come
together as
a community.
